Randi Zuckerberg, who is two years older than 27-year-old Mark, had been Facebook’s director of marketing, responsible for initiatives such as coverage of US elections.
In a letter Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg and head of communications Elliot Schrage this week, she said her new company, RtoZ media, would be “focused on the exciting trends underway in the media industry”.
Although she did not provide further details, Miss Zuckerberg’s focus on marketing Facebook’s activity around major news events prompted speculation the new firm would be similarly targeted.
“I have spent my years at Facebook pouring my heart and soul into innovating and pushing the media industry forward by introducing new concepts around live, social, participatory viewing that the media industry has since adopted,” she said in her resignation letter.
Industry commentators suggested the new venture would inevitably lead to her working with some of her brothers biggest rivals, such as Twitter and Google, whose latest social network, Google+ has received broadly positive reviews.
Facebook made no comment on Miss Zuckerberg’s departure beyond thanking her for her work.
